Masked Celebration
Hundreds of people were killed in
an epidemic years ago, prompting the inhabitants of Vigan to perform a nine-day
novena. Surprisingly, the number of deaths reduced as the days progressed,
until there were none on the final day. The Binatbatan Festival of the Arts
grew out of this. The Feast of the Natives, also known as the Binatbatan
Festival of the Arts, first took place on May 3, 1883, and is now held every
year from the final week of April to the first week of May.
Former Mayor Eva S. Medina
continued her campaign to promote Vigan's culture, which resulted in the
establishment of the Viva Vigan Festival of the Arts in the year 11995.
Binatbatan Festival was established in 2002 to commemorate abel-iloco hand-loom
weaving. The Binatbatan Festival honors and recognizes one of the industries
that has kept the inhabitants alive. The Binatbatan street dancing contest
illustrates the process of binatbatan, which involves smashing cotton pods to
remove seeds.
The Binatbatan Festival of the
Arts is one of Vigan's many outstanding festivals. Promoting the municipality's
local product and tourism is a significant plus. It not only aids in marketing,
but also in educating young Biguenos and tourists about local culture and
livelihood.
