Penance

                      Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday, is a time of contemplation and preparation before the Easter celebrations. Christians emulate Jesus Christ's penance and 40-day retreat into the desert by observing the 40 days of Lent. Fasting, both from diet and merriment, distinguishes Loaned.                 Lent isn't what most people look forward to. Reminiscences of giving up candy or suffering week-by-week Stations of the Cross come to mind immediately.                 We're showcasing Lenten traditions and memories from people who have shared their stories with us.   Slavery, racism, bigotry, homophobia, inequality, and the list goes on: women once lived in a very abusive, aggressive, and hypercritical culture. Boys and girls are socialized from birth to play certain roles and act in ways that society expects of them.
